Today we continue our pre-season series on players to watch for the 2012-13 season.

We turn our attention once again to the Tigers on the Bayou and their new QB Zach Mettenberger (6-5 222lbs).

Zach originally signed with the University of Georgia out of Oconee County High School in Georgia. Zach was part of UGA’s 2010 class; however he enrolled early (Jan. 2009) to get a head start. He spent one year at Georgia before transferring to Butler (Kan.) Community College for the 2010 season. He was dismissed from UGA for off field issues after UGA’s Spring Game where he was competing with Georgia’s current starter Aaron Murray; on a side note, they were basically even coming out of the spring game. Zach transferred to Butler Community College leading his team to an 11-1 record and a berth in the JUCO National Championship Game. His team finished the year ranked No. 2 in the nation with Zach starting all 12 games at Butler, throwing for 2,678 yards and 32 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

One of the most interesting things about Zach’s story is how much it parallels another recent QB in the SEC that lead his team to a National Championship and he also took home the Heisman Trophy. Cam Newton’s story is eerily similar to Zach’s. Cam original signed with UF after a stellar High School career, Cam also got in some off the field trouble at UF and was dismissed and subsequently transferred to a JUCO, leading them to a JUCO National Championship, the rest they say, is history.

It is yet to be seen if Zach Mettenberger can match Cam Newton’s accomplishments on the larger stage; however LSU is loaded again this year, and with a pre-season #1 ranking it will be interesting to watch this story unfold.
