As usually happens after the end of the regular season, the firing and hiring commences. As an earlier article indicated, this year has been no exception. The surprising thing has been the domino affect these openings have created.

I will highlight some of these hires and offer up my “unexpert” opinion, in no particular order.

Kentucky- Fired Joker Phillips and Hired FSU Defensive Coord. Mark Stoops. Stoops obviously has coaching in his bloodlines and is a great defensive minded coach. I really think this was one of the better hires out of all. Side note: Will Muschamp did a great job of swooping in and hiring Joker Phillips to be WR Coach and recruiting coord. Phillips is a great recruiter and Muschamp snagged him.

Western Kentucky- Willie Taggart left WKU to take over for USF, who had recently fired Skip Holtz after a disappointing tenure. Bobby Petrino is announced as the new coach at WKU, DON’T BE SO SURPRISED.. My thought is this was a PR move for Petrino and WKU will be a short stepping stone for him. This will allow the dust to settle on his marital issues that caused him to be dismissed from Arkansas.

N.C. State -Fires Bill O’Brien and hires Dave Doeren after a successful career at Northern Illinois. Doeren should be successful at NC State. If you think about it, the ACC is only a slight step up from the MAC in the level of competition.

Tennessee- Well, were to begin…..UT fires Derek Dooley and then the fun begins. It was widely reported that UT would spend as much as necessary to get a marquee named coach, preferable Jon Gruden, from most reports. Gruden turned them down, so they set their sights on OK. State’s Mike Gundy and he sub sequentially turned them down. UT then apparently turned their attention to Charlie Strong. Strong, as many know was a longtime coordinator at several SEC schools and has deep roots in the SEC; needless to say it surprised many when Strong turned them down as well. Enter Butch Jones from Cincinnati, Jones has been successful with the Bearcats, however it remains to be seen how he will handle life in the SEC.

Cincinnati- Butch Jones leaving for UT opened this job up. And to my surprise Tommy Tuberville leaves Texas Tech to become the new Head Coach of the Bearcats. I don’t know about you but this one I didn’t see coming.

Auburn- You thought I had forgotten, didn’t you? I was just saving the best for last. So AU fires Gene Chizik less than two years after winning a National Championship. Their search didn’t take long, apparently they knew who the wanted. The Tigers hired former Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzhan to take over the embattled program. Honestly, folks like me that look for material are ecstatic about this hire. THIS MEANS WE WILL HAVE KRISTI MALZHAN IS BACK!!!!! If you don’t know, Gus’ wife Kristi created quite a bit of fodder before Gus left Auburn with these kinds of statements on the video.
